Frosty temperatures are back in Toronto, but there is no need to hibernate this winter! Not when there are so many ways to get out and enjoy the beauty of the snow-covered city. Undoubtedly, some people would prefer to stay indoors sipping hot chocolate in front of a roaring fire until spring comes again.
But if you’re feeling adventurous, why not make the most of the snowy season and grab your skates? The thrill of gliding around on the ice might just help you fall in love with winter all over again. Since Toronto is home to more than 50 outdoor rinks and trails, you will never be at a loss for ways to enjoy a good old-fashioned Canadian winter. Let’s take a look at some of the best and most scenic ice-skating spots this great city has to offer.
Dieppe Park Loop
With both a hockey rink and a pleasure loop, Dieppe Park at 455 Cosburn Avenue offers something for everyone. It is quickly becoming a favourite hangout for all winter lovers, from experienced skaters to little ones and those still developing their skating skills. It’s a must-visit place this season, especially for those living in the East End.

Kew Gardens
This 6.5-hectare park at 2075 Queen St East is stunning to visit any time of the year! There’s a children’s playground, splash pad, a baseball diamond and colourful gardens in the warmer months.
Once winter’s chill begins to set in, the feeling of soaring around on the ice while surrounded by natural beauty will warm your soul. Best of all, the rink is well maintained, making for a pleasant gliding experience all season long!
Riverdale Park East
It’s difficult to find a better local winter getaway than Riverdale Park East, which is located at 550 Broadview Ave. Yes, there’s a fantastic skating rink that makes the cold weather a pleasure. There’s also a tobogganing hill that can only be described as epic, which makes this park a huge favourite of the young and young-at-heart.
As you glide along the ice, the spectacular view of the Toronto skyline will take your breath away. There’s also a separate hockey pad, which makes skating for pleasure even safer and more enjoyable.
Evergreen Brick Works
Once the site of an old industrial site that shut down in 1989, Evergreen Brick Works at 550 Bayview Ave is now one of Toronto’s most beautiful and celebrated landmarks! Each year, more than 500,000 visitors arrive to admire the stunning trails and ravines that make up this green oasis. It is also home to several bustling events and public markets throughout the year.
In the winter, Evergreen Brick Works transforms into a snowy wonderland! Call it a rink or call it a trail; either way, you can’t deny the magic of weaving through the frost-covered foliage under the canopy of exposed beams that remain from the old brick factory.
Nathan Phillip Square
It’s almost impossible to have a conversation about winter or skating without talking about Nathan Phillips Square! Located at 100 Queen Street West near the Eaton Centre, this has been Toronto’s go-to skating hotspot for generations.
Don’t have your own skates? Rentals are available for a small fee, which means no one has to miss out on the fun. Though practically synonymous with the Cavalcade of Lights and the Christmas tree lighting, the rink at Nathan Phillips Square is open from late November to mid-March.
Barbara Ann Scott Trail
The skating trail at 420 Yonge Street was named after the famous figure skater. The small oval trail takes only minutes for the Zamboni to clear, and it’s the perfect alternative for when the quintessential Nathan Phillips Square becomes too crowded. This five-metre-wide trail is also environmentally friendly, with a non-toxic, natural carbon dioxide refrigeration system that produces no net greenhouse gases.
As you twirl around the loop, the sights of beautiful ice sculptures await you, and there are firepits where you can gather should you need to warm up. Best of all, all of the conveniences of downtown Toronto are at your fingertips, where you can unwind with a hot coffee or hot chocolate once you’re off the ice.
