5 Family Getaways to Check Out Near Toronto this Winter

There’s nothing quite like a family road trip, and not just in the summer. The coldest months of the year are a great time to get away for some quality time with the kids. Fortunately, Torontonians don’t have to travel far to enjoy an out-of-town weekend this winter. Some of Ontario’s best ski hills, nature trails, indoor swimming pools, and spas are located within an hour or two from our fair city.

So corral the kids, pack your overnight bags, and check out one of these family getaways before winter is over…

1) Horseshoe Resort

For some snowy, kid-friendly fun, take Highway 400 north to Horseshoe Resort. Just an hour outside of the city, this family retreat is the perfect place to hit the trails. That said, there’s a lot more to do here than enjoy a skiing expedition. Strap on some snowshoes, hop on a snowmobile, or try fat biking. Whether you’re a cycling enthusiast or you’re looking to experience something new, pedalling around in the winter is sure to be memorable! For your little ones, don’t forget about tubing—kids are big fans of coasting down the hills on these inflatable devices.

2) Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain is about two hours from the city, but it’s well worth the drive. First off, the lodging options (which include everything from chalets to townhomes to luxury hotel suites) are as cozy as they are chic. Then there’s the variety of activities available. Visitors enjoy skiing, mountaintop skating, snow tubing, indoor swimming, and getting pampered at the resort’s premier spas (to name a few). If all of that weren’t enough, Blue Mountain is situated in Collingwood. There’s so much to do in this charming town, you’ll want to make a separate trip to explore it!

3) Niagara Falls

This next attraction needs no introduction. Niagara Falls is awe-inspiring in the summer, and the sightseeing tours are well worth the admission fees. What many visitors don’t know is, the falls are just as stunning in the winter. Their icy surface gives off the impression that they’re frozen (though in fact, the over three tonnes of water are still roaring down the embankment). In addition to this beautiful sight, Niagara Falls offers a variety of attractions that are open year-round.

4) Glen Eden Ski Area

A short 45-minute drive from the city, you’ll find Glen Eden Ski Area. This smaller resort is home to 12 ski and snowboarding hills, six lifts, a tubing park, and more. This is also the place to go if you or your kids could use a lesson or two before hitting the slopes. With programs for skiiers of all skill levels—including beginners—Glen Eden is a great place to learn the ropes. While you’re there, considering stopping in Milton’s quaint downtown to see the clocktower and historic architecture!

5) Great Wolf Lodge

While it’s just across the parkway from Niagara Falls, Great Wolf Lodge deserves an entry of its own. This family resort is best known for its indoor waterparks. Watching the kid splash around in a climate-controlled environment is one of the best ways to escape the cold! This affordable resort also offers plenty of shopping and dining options, along with a variety of activities just for little ones. From arts and crafts to friendly singalongs, your kids will be entertained from the beginning of your trip right up until the end!
