How To Turn Your Yard Into a Winter Wonderland

Share This Post:

There’s no denying it: winter is on its way. Along with warm sweaters and glistening snowflakes, the season brings some less-than-hospitable weather. While many Torontonians head inside once that happens, it’s entirely possible to enjoy the great outdoors when the temperature drops. A great way to do that is by transforming your backyard into an inviting place to relax!

Here are a few simple tips for turning your outdoor space into a cozy winter wonderland…

Warm it up

Taking the kids sledding in the ice and snow is one thing. Shivering while you’re socializing with friends is quite another. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to warm up your backyard. If you plan to spend some serious time outside, you might want opt for an outdoor fireplace. From steel to stone and wood to gas, there are plenty of options. When you’re looking for something more pocketbook-friendly, an electric heater will do. Remember that while propane models can emit great heat, they’re not always safe in partially-enclosed spaces.

Find seating

First things first: if you don’t have any outdoor shelter, you may want to add some. Your simplest option is probably a patio cover kit. They comes with all the necessary components, and tend to be fairly easy to construct. Just be sure to choose one that’s all-weather (and be aware of the snow load it can handle). While you’re at the home improvement store, you might want to rethink your furniture. Some materials—like plastic, wood, and fabric—don’t do well in the snow. The good news is, you’ll have no trouble finding something else that will work (like teak or resin wicker).

Let there be light

There’s nothing like a nightcap (or cup of herbal tea) under the stars—but it’s nice to have another source of illumination when you’re outside. The right landscape lighting can make your yard safer for visiting neighbours while adding a touch of drama to your outdoor space. String lights cast a warm glow, making them perfect for your trees and the patio. If you’re trying to conserve energy, opt for a solar-powered set. Lastly, if you’re just looking for something stylish to place on an outdoor tabletop, consider an ultra-unique Moroccan lamp!

Make it magical

What would a winter wonderland be without a touch of fun? Setting up an outdoor space provides the perfect opportunity to build snowmen with the kids—or get crafty by making a seasonal wreath. All you’ll need for the latter is some dried grapevine and a few decorations (such as pinecones or fabric bows) to dress it up. Your local craft store should have all the materials. When you hang up your wreath, put out some glowing candles in your favourite scent or colour—and your yard will be brimming with personality.

Indulge

A hot drink is exactly what we all need on a cold day—and that includes the kids. When they’re outside playing, brew some hot chocolate to bring out. While the instant versions can be warming, there’s something about using cocoa power that makes it extra special. If you’re looking for a beverage of the “adult” variety, try making mulled wine. This richly-flavoured drink, which typically contains notes of orange and cinnamon, isn’t just for Christmas!

Winter can mean more time indoors, and that can feel isolating. Fortunately, by putting a bit of effort into warming up, decorating, and enjoying your outdoor space, your family can escape cabin fever during the coldest month.
