Hiking in the East End: Our Favourite All-Season Trails

Share This Post:

Do you know one of the things we love most about Toronto life? It’s never having to hear the words, “I’m bored.” There’s a new experience around the corner every day of every season. And contrary to popular belief, not everything has to cost a lot of money. In fact, some of the best adventures are free, especially if you love to get out and hike in the great outdoors. Today, let’s take a look at some of the most breathtaking hiking trails you’ll find in the East End neighbourhoods.

Danforth Village

Fantastic shopping and a dynamic, multicultural dining scene are what Danforth Village is really known for. With the many shops and restaurants you find along Danforth Avenue, this reputation is well-deserved. But you may be surprised that this trendy and surprisingly affordable neighbourhood also offers plenty of beautiful green space and is a prime spot for enjoying a relaxing hike. Here are a couple of the trails you must know about:

Taylor Creek Park

Easily accessible by car or transit, Taylor Creek Park is worth a visit any time of the year. The trail runs from Don Mills Road in the west all the way to Dawes Road in the east, with plenty of parking available at either end. Bring your walking sticks or your bike helmet, and prepare to take in the sights of nature and wildlife all along this creekside park. The bridge spanning across the creek is a stunning sight, a perfect spot to take a breather or snap a picture. If you venture out during the cold weather, a series of firepits allow you to warm up before trekking on. There’s even a dog fountain available, which means your favourite four-legged friend can join you on what is sure to be many adventures!

Glen Stewart Park

Do you love the excitement of the city but still feel the occasional need to get away from it all? Glen Stewart Park runs south between Glen Manor Drive East and West. The trail brings you through a pristine wooded area. Your journey down the boardwalk takes you along a gentle stream and rolling hills and ends at Ivan Forest Gardens. What a perfect way to throw all your cares away while enjoying a relaxing afternoon. During the nice weather, picnic tables are available where you can refuel with a packed lunch.

What else makes Toronto such a desirable place to live? Here are a few other thoughts:

Riverdale

The friendly and diverse neighbourhood of Riverdale is a popular place for young professionals and growing families to put down roots. With the perfect combination of parkland and city convenience, it’s no wonder Riverdale is starting to garner more attention. You’ll find more green spaces to escape the hustle and bustle of the city here than nearly anywhere else in the east end.

Crothers Woods Trail

Located on the corner of the Danforth and Pape, Crothers Woods offers nearly 10 km of trails leading through unspoiled beauty. Views of the lovely Lower Don River, lush greenery, and glimpses of Toronto wildlife draw countless hikers, cyclers, and joggers throughout the year. It’s a unique place to take in the beauty of nature without ever losing sight of the spectacular Toronto skyline!

Beltline Trail

In the 1890s, Toronto opened a commuter line that never took off and closed after just two years. Over one hundred years later, the city revitalized the Beltline Trail into a stunning path weaving through several of Toronto’s most scenic neighbourhoods, including Rosedale, Moore Park, and Forest Hill.

Along the way, you’ll encounter many other happy hikers and joggers who come out to enjoy the colourful tunnels, lush greenery, and dreamlike bridges that adorn the trail.

Riverdale Park East

When the snow flies, Riverdale Park East is one of the hottest spots to be. An epic tobogganing hill and outdoor skating rink await the young and young at heart who love heart-pumping adventure. However, there’s a lot more to the park than winter thrills. A naturalized area to the north provides multiple recreational trails where you can explore the grassy slopes and wetland marshes. It is also a gorgeous and romantic place to sit on a bench while enjoying the sunset!

Toronto isn’t just beautiful and fun. It’s a great place to invest:

Leslieville

With its family-friendly and small village feel, Leslieville is one of the most sought-after communities of Toronto’s east end. The weekend brunch scene is legendary, and the neighbourhood is home to some of the most exciting events throughout the year, including the Leslieville Beer Fest. Plus, its location along the Don River provides some of the best nature getaways you’ll find in the city. Here are some of the most notable examples:

The Leslie Street Spit

It’s hard to imagine that one of the most beautiful places in Toronto began as a dumping site for unused bricks and debris. You may have to come and see the Leslie Street Spit for yourself to believe it. This five-kilometre path from Leslie Street to the water’s edge takes the average hiker about an hour. Along the way, you’ll encounter grassy trails, tall trees, and potentially over 300 different species of birds!

Lower Don River Trail

If you’re ever unsure what to do or where to go on a sunny afternoon, you can never go wrong by visiting the Lower Don River Trail. This 13.5 km path takes you on a journey from ET Seton Park to Corktown Common, providing majestic views of unspoiled nature, scenic bridges and overpasses. The flowing water of the river is sure to soothe all your tensions and stresses of the day. In addition, the trail is a gateway to many other parks and sights of the city, including Taylor Park, Todmorden Mills, and the Evergreen Brick Works. There is far too much to explore in a single day. We’re sure you will agree that multiple visits are a must!
