For a Smooth Move, Try These 5 Tips!

Share This Post:

No doubt about it: the purchase of a new home is cause for celebration! Unfortunately, the process of moving from one place to another can put a bit of a damper on the excitement. From packing up your belongings to arranging for transportation to figuring out how to lay everything out in a new living space, most moves require a good deal of effort. On the bright side, there are steps you can take to help ensure that everything goes smoothly!

If you’ll be moving soon, try these five tips to simplify the process—and get your new home set up quickly…

1) Measure everything—twice

One of the most annoying things about moving is figuring out how to get your furniture and major appliances into spaces that are still somewhat unfamiliar. That’s why it’s so important to measure everything carefully. In addition to the rooms in your new home and any oversized items you’ll be bringing with you, take down the dimensions of all doorways, staircases, and other passages. There’s nothing worse than discovering you can’t squeeze your couch or fridge inside on moving day!

2) Declutter early

One of the most important early steps you can take is decluttering your current home. In the weeks prior to your move, you’ll want to get rid of any clothing, furniture, decor, and appliances that you no longer use. Not only will paring down your possessions mean less packing (and less heavy lifting), it can also help you reduce the chaos in your future living space. To ensure that your move can be carried out on schedule, call your local donation centre as early as possible.

3) Label boxes by room

Packing can be a major hassle, and so can unpacking. To make things easier on your family, try to group similar items together and label everything clearly. While jotting down the contents of each box may seem like the most intuitive thing to do, you should also include the name of the room where you’ll eventually be unpacking them. Making this basic information accessible at a glance can dramatically simplify the process—and save you time when you’re setting up.

4) Switch over your utilities

It might seem like an easy thing to remember, but you’d be surprised by how many people forget to switch over their utilities. The result can be added last-minute stress and even ongoing headaches (depending on how long you wait). To avoid any future disputes, aim to get in touch with all service providers at least three weeks before you plan to move!

5) Pack a bag for the first couple of nights

Before you finish packing up, set aside your most important essentials for those first few days after you move. Few things are less fun than digging through boxes in search of utensils, eyeglasses, or your favourite sweater. By ensuring that every member of your family has a bag with those day-to-day items close at hand, you can cut down on a lot of post-move aggravation!
