5 Unique Holiday Decorating Tips

Share This Post:

It’s happening again: the holiday season is on its way. If you want to get in the spirit of things, now is the time to start thinking about how you’ll decorate. This year, why not think beyond the basics? Start with a few unique ideas for adorning your home.

Here are five holiday decorating tips you’ve probably never tried before…

1) Make a magnolia leaf wreath

Is Christmas your holiday of choice? Are you getting a little bored of the pine needle and poinsettia aesthetic? Fortunately, there’s a beautiful alternative.

Magnolia leaves have a lush, lively look—and a vibrant colour. It’s a shade that’s far from the evergreen we’re used to seeing in the winter, which makes it quite refreshing. When these leaves are carefully arranged on a standard grapevine wreath, the result is stunning.

Interested in trying out the trend? You can find magnolia leaves at many plant stores, and online through major retailers like Amazon. Check out this HGTV article to start assembling your wreath once you have your supplies.

2) Bring back popcorn garlands

There are some old-fashioned decorations that deserve a second chance. That’s especially true when they’re fun to create!

If you erect a Christmas tree at this time of year, making decorations provides an opportunity for some quality time with the family. Popcorn garlands are a festive example—one you don’t see all that often anymore.

All you need for this seasonal craft is some white popcorn and a needle and thread. For a bit of colour, you can add some dried cranberries onto each strand.

3) Repurpose your greeting cards

You know the drill. You get your holiday cards in the mail. You open them up. Then, they’re relegated to the mantle or stuck to the refrigerator for a couple of weeks until they wind up in the trash.

The good news is, there are a few ways you can turn your old cards into new decorations. One of the most popular is using small clothespins to attach them to a garland or wreath.

If you’re looking for a fun craft to do with the kids, grab some child-friendly scissors and start cutting out some of the holiday shapes from your cards. Using a glue stick, you can use them to create a collage.

4) Make your ornaments a centrepiece

Have a few too many tree ornaments? If some of them are colour-coordinated, you can display them elegantly in a glass bowl. This stylish statement works best with holiday balls due to their uniform shape.

If you want to add a bit more visual interest to your centrepiece, add a strand of battery-powered white lights or some clipped evergreen branches.

5) Try your hand at potpourri

It may not be a decoration, but potpourri can make your home feel a lot more festive. The stovetop version is especially nice at this time of year. By simmering a few key ingredients in some water, you can make your living space smell like the holidays.

While there’s no shortage of potential scents to use, cloves, cinnamon sticks, rosemary sprigs, cranberries, and citrus fruit is a surefire combination.

It may be a cliche, but it’s true: there’s no place like home for the holidays. Whether you’re in a condo, townhouse, or single-family home, the right decorations can turn your living space into a magical place this winter!
