In November, it’s tempting to curl up on the couch with a warm beverage. While late fall is a great time to stay in with the family, there’s also something to be said for getting out of the house—before winter sets in. Fortunately, this city is filled with homey coffee shops, and they’re not just for laptop-toting college students. Believe it or not, some of Toronto’s best cafes are family-friendly. If you’re looking to unwind over a latte with your little ones in tow, here are five great places to do it…
1) Cherry Bomb Coffee
Without a doubt, Roncesvalles is one of Toronto’s most popular neighbourhoods for families. It’s not just the historical homes, charming streets, and small-town feel that make this area so special. It’s also the local businesses—many of which cater to parents with young children. Cherry Bomb Coffee is a great example. Visit this cozy cafe, and you’ll fall in love with the perfectly-crafted espresso drinks, fresh-baked pastries, and kid-friendly atmosphere. If you show up on the weekend, expect to see plenty of strollers parked outside!
2) Lazy Daisy’s Cafe
Lazy Daisy’s Cafe is a beloved go-to for families in the east end. This bright, comfortable space on Gerrard Street East features enough books, toys, and games to keep even the most rambunctious kids entertained. Grab a coffee while your little ones play, or order some tasty cafe fare if you’re feeling peckish (the quiche is outstanding). You’ll also find plenty of kid favourites on the menu, like grilled cheese and tot-sized brunches. Without a doubt, Lazy Daisy’s is one of the best places in Toronto for a family to while away a crisp autumn morning or afternoon.
3) Snakes and Lattes
If your children aren’t so little, check out Snakes and Lattes. This popular board game cafe is perfect for kids age 8 and older. There are three locations in Toronto—one in the Annex, one in Midtown, and one on College Street. No matter which location you try, you’ll find a wide selection of board games and hot beverages (along with drinks of the adult variety). The menu also offers an array of comfort foods that are perfect for sharing—from quesadillas to kettle chips. Put simply, there’s no better spot to hold your family game night this fall.
4) Sprouts
You’ve heard of family-friendly coffee shops. But if you’re looking for a place that’s more social and kid-oriented, you might want to check out a play cafe. Sprouts in Leslieville is one of Toronto’s best. This 6000-square-foot space features several indoor playgrounds that are sure to tire out your energetic little ones. While they enjoy the slides and mini climbing walls, chat with other moms and dads over free tea or coffee. Your first visit to Sprouts will be free; to drop in again, consider purchasing a day pass or membership.
5) Oaks and Acorns
Oaks and Acorns is a social hub for young children and their parents. In this activity studio, you’ll find plenty of toys, play equipment, and dress-up clothing to provide hours of entertainment. You’ll also find a cafe that serves up specialty coffee drinks, along with baked goods and light lunch items. There’s one location in the Junction and one on Danforth, which means you can check out Oaks and Acorns whether you’re in the west or east end of the city.
When you have kids, life can be pretty unpredictable. Fortunately, there’s one thing you can count on. No matter where you live in this city, you’re never far from a great local cafe that you’ll enjoy just as much as your children!
