Sometimes, you just have to get in your car and hit the open road. When you have kids, that’s easier said than done—or is it? This spring, there are many great family festivals and events happening in towns and cities near Toronto. What better time to take a day trip?
While there are far too many fun, family-friendly things happening to list them all here, we’ll look at a few of our favourites.
1) The International Buskerfest in Dundas
Dundas is just a half-hour drive away from Toronto. So why not check out the International Buskerfest, which will take place in the community from June 1st to 3rd?
Last year, performers from around the world used trapeze rigs, giant unicycles, and stilts to create spectacles that wowed attendees. There were also a number of shows designed just for families, including child-friendly vaudeville and a water balloon extravaganza. What type of fun will your family uncover at Buskerfest this year?
While you’re in Dundas, consider stopping to check out Tew’s Falls, a beautiful, 41-metre ribbon waterfall.
2) Art on the Street in Collingwood
If you’re looking for something fun to do with the family, why not take the two-hour drive up to Collingwood?
Starting May 19th (and continuing on until October), you can stroll through the town’s annual outdoor art exhibition. Colourful banners, intricately-painted chairs, and other artworks by over 50 regional artists will be displayed. In essence, downtown will be one big art gallery for your family to explore.
As a bonus, there are all kinds of other fun things to do in the area. The beaches of Wasaga Beach are incredible. And families looking for a one-of-a-kind experience should check out Scenic Caves Nature Adventures, where you can explore caves, walk across a suspensions bridge, and even try ziplining.
3) Ottawa, for the Canadian Tulip Festival
Who doesn’t love a trip to Ottawa? Most Toronto visitors will want to stay overnight (it’s at least a four-hour drive after all). But we’re calling it a day trip because you’ll definitely want to take a full day to explore the Canadian Tulip Festival.
From May 10th to 21st, visitors can take in sprawling tulip beds and tulip-themed art, or participate in outdoor yoga, film screenings, and a variety of other activities. The festival takes place in several locations (including the very popular Byward Market), so your family will get to see the sights of Ottawa as you explore.
The festival attracts over 650,000 visitors annually, so you know it’s worth the trip. And there’s no shortage of gorgeous old hotels downtown—just make sure to book early.
4) Carassauga in Mississauga
From most places in Toronto, Mississauga is a bit of trek. But from May 25th to 27th, it’s definitely worth the trip. That’s when Carrasauga, a multicultural festival featuring global sights, sounds, and tastes, takes place.
Pavilions in locations across Mississauga will showcase the cultures of over 70 countries. Adventurous families will enjoy trying delicious foods from countries as diverse as India, Ireland, and Brazil. We suggest the ‘toonie taster’ plates—tiny platters that allow you to taste many different dishes for just a toonie.
Carrassauga also features thousands of performers. Take in traditional dances, live music, and more.
5) Drive west to High Park
We know—it isn’t actually outside of the city. But for many Torontonians (especially those in the East End), High Park is quite a commute.
If you’re looking for a full-day family adventure but want to stay relatively close to home, try this sprawling park in the city’s west end. Its main attraction this time of year is the cherry blossoms, which bloom at the onset of spring. These gorgeous flowers, which appear on the park’s many sakura trees, are a must-see.
Of course, there are many other things to see and do in High Park. You’ll find long walking trails, playgrounds, barbeque pits, a zoo, and more. Pro tip: park your car when you get close to an entrance. Finding a spot inside can be tricky this time of year.
