Torontonians love brunch, and for good reason. Few things are as alluring as sweet and savoury comfort food on a cold day (or, let’s face it, any day of the week).
But west-end outings aren’t always easy for parents. From lineups to jazzed-up food and a heavy focus on alcohol, brunch doesn’t always feel like it’s made for families with kids. Which of the city’s most buzzworthy eateries are truly family friendly?
There are no shortage of incredible brunch spots serving fresh takes on breakfast classics in the west end. At many of these restaurants, you’ll feel right at home if you bring the kids.
We look at four west end restaurants that make brunch that are perfect to enjoy with the whole family.
La Cubana
La Cubana offers short wait times, a fun environment, and an appealing children’s menu. With its most famous in Roncesvalles, this retro diner features seriously delicious Cuban fare. From chorizo empanadas to slow-roast pork and pork belly with pineapple glaze, this diner mixes up brunch.
Your kids will enjoy munching on savoury rice and beans, tostones, and plantain chips as much as you do. Alternatively, they can stick with what might be a more familiar (but equally tasty) option: french toast with bananas and maple syrup.
Huevos Gourmet
Located in beautiful Mimico, Huevos Gourmet is a gem the whole family can enjoy. The restaurant serves a mix of Mexican and French dishes, sometimes fusing the two to create unexpected and delightful flavours. One of their biggest draws is their homefries, made from freshly-picked Ontario potatoes.
Huevos Gourmet also offers kid-sized potions of brunch standards—such as waffles, strawberry-banana crepes, or ham and cheese croissants. After your meal, you may want to consider a family walk in one of the area’s waterfront parks.
Lula Lounge
Lula Lounge offers another truly unique brunch experience in the West End. On Sundays, you can bring the family to this restaurant at Dundas West and Dufferin for a brunch buffet and a beginner salsa lesson! According to Lula’s website, the event aims to get “all generations dancing together.”
Food options run the gamut from eggs and sausage to rice pudding—even the pickiest family member will find something tempting. Admission is just $8 for kids and $18 for adults, which includes entertainment and buffet access for the afternoon.
The Ace
The Ace is one of many restaurants in Roncesvalles that appeal to diners of all ages. It’s also a favourite for brunch lovers in the area, so if you go at peak times, you might be waiting for a table.
Serving breakfast burritos and french toast with caramelized fruit, The Ace is the kind of place you bring your kids if you want to broaden their horizons—but you still want them to actually eat their food. Staff is known for being friendly and accommodating with families and picky eaters.
