It’s a city, no, it’s a neighbourhood, no, it’s a village… It’s Summerhill, which is the best of all of that and more! This Midtown Toronto enclave really does have a lot going for it, whether you’re looking for a peaceful, idyllic place to raise a family or you’re a rising professional with a taste for the elegant and exciting.
Where is Summerhill, and why can we not get enough of this stunning neighbourhood? We can’t wait to tell you about all of its best highlights.
A Touch of the Countryside in the Heart of the City
As you may know, Toronto is by far the biggest city in Canada in terms of population and all of the amenities that go along with it. If you’re picturing huge skyscrapers, bustling streets, and a thrilling lineup of festivals and entertainment, you would be on point.
Now, add rolling hills, ravines, greenery, and lush trees and parks, with beautiful, historic homes along tree-lined streets. These are all part of the picture in Summerhill. The neighbourhood’s origins date back to 1842, when wealthy resident Charles Thompson commissioned and constructed a luxury home for his family. He chose the name “Summer Hill” due to its location at the top of the hill.
Today, the community is known for its picturesque green spaces, including Lionel Conacher Park, with a baseball diamond, playground, and splashpad. A few minutes to the east lies David A. Balfour Park, a big favourite among residents for many reasons: water features, tranquil gardens, and nature trails that include Yellow Creek and the Vale of Avoca Ravine, all against the backdrop of Toronto’s spectacular skyline.
Dog lovers and their four-legged friends also have much to celebrate, thanks to Ramsden Park, where an off-leash zone allows for boundless playtime and happiness. (A separate fenced area for small dogs means canine family members of all sizes can join the fun.) A skating rink provides a reason to love the snow and ice, while a tennis court, baseball diamond, bike trail, basketball court, pickleball court, playground, and wading pool make this a hot spot throughout the warmer months.
If you’re looking for something a little more secluded and off the beaten path, Severn Creek Park is a hidden gem right near Summerhill! A ravine trail with steep, forested slopes creates a more rugged atmosphere a true outdoor enthusiast is sure to love.

Exploring all of these beautiful sights means you will need to keep your energy levels up. Fortunately, you’re also close to several fantastic dining options!
A few examples include Terroni with its iconic rooftop patio and traditional Italian fare. A quick stroll down Yonge Street leads to Sorrel Restaurant & Bar, for when you’re in the mood for some fine dining, and Boxcar Social, both a cozy cafe and a wine bar.
The shopping scene in Summerhill is also one-of-a-kind. If you prefer independent boutiques to traditional malls, the stretch between Summerhill and Rosedale has everything from international fashion items and beauty shops to home decor finds and homemade gifts.
The famous Yonge & St. Clair shopping district is also just minutes away. Here you’ll find a hub of trendiness and activity, with all of the brands you’ve come to know and love. For the ultimate luxury experience, travel a couple of subway stops to Bloor-Yorkville, also known as the “Mink Mile,” to pick up the latest designer fashion items.
As you’ve probably guessed by now, there’s a lot to enjoy in and near Summerhill. All of it is also easy to get to, thanks to a high walkability score and an exceptional public transit system. Between subway stations, bus routes, and a network of trails and residential loops, you can quickly get anywhere you want to go.

Summerhill’s Outstanding Real Estate Options
As if there weren’t already enough reasons to fall in love with Summerhill. World-class parks and shopping make it a great place to visit, and an abundance of beautiful, historic homes and community spirit make it an even better place to live.
The housing mix is primarily made up of stately Victorian and Edwardian homes, both semi-detached and detached. Most were constructed before the era of cars, so driveways are a rare luxury; however, plenty of street parking is available throughout the neighbourhood. It’s such a convenient location that many residents don’t even need or want a car. In addition to freehold homes, you will also have your choice of some townhouses and a few low-rise, upscale condos.
Should you decide to make Summerhill your next home, you’ll be in great company. Neighbouring communities include Yorkville, Rosedale, Moore Park, and The Annex, making this one of Toronto’s premium locations.
