The St. Lawrence Market is widely regarded as one of Toronto’s best-loved attractions. Picture 120 vendors across three buildings offering everything from organic coffee and gourmet foods to kitchenware and hand-crafted clothing. One thing is certain; the market truly showcases Toronto’s rich culture. Endless variety means you can never shop at the same market twice – even if you visit multiple times a week.
Unsurprisingly, this is one of the largest and most celebrated farmers’ markets in Canada. What you may not realize is that it’s not just a market, it’s also a neighbourhood, and a highly sought-after one at that! In this post, we’ll explore the types of homes and the incredible lifestyle you might enjoy as a St. Lawrence Market resident.

A Tribute to History
St. Lawrence Market (often referred to as simply St. Lawrence when you’re talking about the neighbourhood) is one of Toronto’s oldest communities, with a history that predates Canada itself.
Toronto was first established as a city in 1834. Canada itself didn’t formally become a nation until 1867, which makes Toronto – and St. Lawrence – a fascinating part of history.
The neighbourhood run between Yonge Street and Parliament Street, a location that guarantees a lot of hustle and bustle! Today, this is one of the most vibrant areas in a city that is already full of excitement. The massive market the neighbourhood is named after helps, but there is plenty more to love about St. Lawrence.

A Day in Your Life in St. Lawrence
Every day brings a host of new experiences, and the list of things to see and do is long! You might begin your day with a morning stroll while taking in the sights of a few of Toronto’s historic landmarks.
The area is home to the iconic Flatiron Building and St. James Cathedral – which boasts the tallest spire in Canada – at an awe-inspiring 92.9 metres high! St. Lawrence offers so many incredible landmarks and amenities that several walking tours exist to provide an even more immersive experience.
Beautiful architecture aside, your days will be full and busy. Perhaps you’ll catch the latest performance at venues like Meridian Hall (formerly the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) or the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. If you prefer more laid-back activities, you could always stop to admire the public art installations throughout the neighbourhood. Along the way, be sure to stop at the Toronto Sculpture Garden.
The area is also home to numerous shops, many of which are independently owned. A day of errands becomes something to look forward to rather than a chore, with so many unique items to browse from. We’ve saved the best for last — the food! St. Lawrence boasts a wide range of pubs, bars, restaurants, and cafes. Whatever flavour you’re craving, you’ll find it, often within easy walking distance.
An Abundance of Green
Toronto overall is a haven of green space, with gorgeous parks and trails all over the city. St. Lawrence Park may be one of the more bustling neighbourhoods, but it, too, offers abundant greenery to balance out the excitement.
- St. James Park is located a little north of the market. Colourful gardens and scenic walking paths await, and there’s even a food-themed playground to keep the little ones amused! Play structures resemble fruits, veggies, and even desserts, including a spilled ice cream cone.
- Berczy Park is a quaint place to relax and unwind. As you sit and ponder, you can also take in the sights of some art installations, including a cast iron dog and cat sculpture.
- David Crombie Park boasts several walking paths and an off-leash dog park. A fitness circuit is also on the way, so you can soon join your four-legged companions in getting some exercise in – while having fun to boot!
- Sugar Beach Park is also minutes away, located adjacent to the Redpath Sugar Refinery Museum just off Queens Quay. Celebrate a little history, then relax with a cool beverage by the water. Sounds like the next sunny afternoon just got booked!
If you can’t get enough of the waterfront (and who can, really), then you’ll be thrilled that Harbour Square Park is also a quick drive away. What better spot to watch the ferries travel back and forth to Toronto Island?
