If there’s one thing you can count on in Toronto, it’s that there’s lots of fun to be had – and it doesn’t matter which end in the city you live in. Summer, winter, spring and fall – rain or shine– there’s always something exciting just over the horizon.
It could be one of Toronto’s bustling festivals or annual events. Or it could be everyday fun, like a trek over to the island. And while Toronto may have a reputation for being expensive, there are still many inexpensive or even free ways to enjoy the city.
Here are five fun activities in the West End alone…
1) Head to High Park
No matter where you live in Toronto, High Park is worth the trip. This 399-acre green space is the largest in the city. It’s also become a go-to during the era of social distancing. Walk the picturesque trails with the family, play a game of tennis with your spouse, or bring your four-legged friend to the massive off-leash area.
There’s even a free zoo where you can meet some new animal friends, such as peacocks, bison, emus, and more – from a safe distance, of course. Other animals such as llamas and rabbits may allow you to get up close and personal.
Afterwards, your family can head over to The Grenadier Cafe for refreshments, where your dog can join you on the patio. As you look around, you’ll quickly see that there is no shortage of fun ways to spend a few hours in High Park right now.

2) Whip up a gourmet meal
Could your pantry use some stocking? Think beyond canned vegetables and check out some of the West Toronto gourmet food shops that offer a fine selection of anything you’re craving.
One of the best is the Mercantile, a charming spot for specialty items in Roncesvalles Village. From imported tea and organic chocolate to artisan cooking oil and high-quality vinegar, this is the perfect place to find unique staples. Another local favourite is the Cheese Boutique in Bloor West Village. Brie and Parmigiano fans and sure to fall in love!
3) Grab Some Top-of-the-Line Takeout
Let’s face it: there are nights when you just don’t feel like cooking. Fortunately, that doesn’t mean you have to settle for low quality takeout.
There are plenty of buzz-worthy west-end eateries that have you covered. In Roncesvalles, Barque Smokehouse is serving up some of the city’s best BBQ—and their mouthwatering meals are just as delicious at home.
Nearby, Cool Hand of a Girl is known for its delicious Mexican eats and sandwiches. If you’re in Junction Triangle, check out Pizzeria Defina for the perfect wood-fired masterpiece.
4) Hit the Shops
Shopping is a favourite pastime for many people, but there’s no question it can get expensive quickly. Fortunately, window shopping is also an option, and it’s a great way to get out with your family.
If you do want to treat yourself to something nice, the boutiques of West Toronto have you covered. Whether you need a cozy sweater, some unique stationery, or a truly exceptional piece of decor, you’ll find it all in the West End!
In the Junction, the Beau and Bauble—along with its nearby counterpart, Beau Men—offers trendy apparel, fun barware, and other must-have items. Another local hotspot is Roncesvalle’s Muttonhead, for ultra-comfy, unisex basics. Those are just two of the endless examples you’ll find in what basically amounts to a shopper’s paradise!

5) Grab a Cup of Joe
Caffeine fanatics, this one’s for you. While it’s easy to brew a batch of coffee at home, there’s nothing quite like a perfectly-pulled espresso shot or beautifully-crafted latte.
That’s where your friendly neighbourhood baristas come in. Sit down and savour the cafe atmosphere that’s as warm and welcoming as your coffee – or you can take away a hot beverage that will make your day.
Hale Coffee and Full Stop Coffee are Junction Triangle gems, while Roncesvalles’ Cherry Bomb Coffee has long been a community highlight.
