5 Places To Get Away From Toronto For The Day This Summer

Summer is the perfect time to jump in the car and get out of the city. The weather is warm, the sun is shining, and the open road is calling. While it’s always fun to head out to cottage country for a while, there are times when you only have a day or two to take a trip. Luckily, there’s no shortage of gorgeous spots to visit that are just a quick drive from the GTA. Whether you’re looking for majestic landscapes or small-town charm, the options for a short family getaway are nearly endless.

Grab the kids, fill up the gas tank, and pack (very) light, because it’s time for a trip you won’t soon forget. Here are five places to enjoy a beautiful summer day outside of Toronto.

1) Crawford Lake Conservation Area

Just a little over an hour from Toronto (close to Milton), you’ll find the gorgeous Crawford Lake Conservation Area. The water there is pristine, and the surrounding forest is truly beautiful. Visitors enjoy 19 kilometers of trail, a boardwalk, and plenty of Niagara-Escarpment views. If you have the time, you might also want to check out the on-site Iroquoian Village (it’s a great place for your family to learn about local First Nations history).

2) Elora

Elora, which sits an hour and a half west of the city, is known as Ontario’s most beautiful village. If you’ve ever visited, you already know why. Picturesque hills, rustic farmland, and the magnificent Elora Gorge (made up of 80-foot limestone cliffs) ensure that visitors are surrounded by nature’s splendour at every turn. There’s also no shortage of things to do while you’re visiting. The village features historic stone architecture that you’ll want to explore, as well as a selection of quaint shops, eateries, and art galleries.

3) Bronte Creek Provincial Park

Bronte Creek Provincial Park is one of the best places near Toronto to immerse yourself in nature. Beautiful hiking trails, a stunning 150-foot ravine, and a farm full of live barnyard animals are just a few of the fantastic attractions you’ll find at this family-friendly site. There’s also a large, on-site campground if you decide to stay the night–but you certainly won’t have to camp out. At a mere 45 minutes, the drive back to the city is a breeze.

4) Toronto Islands

Given how much they have to offer, the Toronto Islands are worth at least one visit every summer. Just a 15-minute ferry ride from the city’s downtown core, this popular local attraction couldn’t possibly be more convenient. If you visit Hanlan’s Point, check out scenic Gibraltar Point Beach (and grab a bite at the Mermaid Cafe). On Centre Island, the kids will love the rides at Centreville Theme Park. Then there’s Ward’s Island—the boardwalk there is a can’t-miss for nature lovers. With so much to do in the area, your best bet is to simply head out and see what the (much-deserved) hype is about for yourself.

5) White Water Walk

Less than an hour and a half from Toronto, the power of nature is on full display. Your family will love White Water Walk for its breathtaking views of the Niagara River Rapids. Stroll along the boardwalk and stop at the many raised platforms along the way to take in the rushing water below. Admission for this self-guided walk is very affordable at just $14 for adults and $9 for kids, so there’s no reason not to check it out on a warm summer day.

These are just a few of the fun family attractions you’ll find near Toronto this summer. If you’re interested in learning what’s happening closer to home, check out our neighbourhood guides!
