Share This Post:

It’s May in Toronto. The weather’s warming up, the greenery is coming out, and families are looking for reasons to get out and about. Luckily, now is a great time to hit the town with your loved ones—and not just because of the city’s lively parks and child-friendly patios. You’ll also find no shortage of seasonal, kid-focused events. This spring, it’s all about festivals. The variety is incredible, which means there’s a little something for even your youngest family members.

If you’re looking to do something a bit different with your little ones this spring, try one of these upcoming festivals…

1) Uptown International Children’s Festival

If your family doesn’t have plans for the upcoming May long weekend, you may want to head down to the Uptown International Children’s Festival. Toronto Centre for the Performing Arts will host musical performances, puppetry, comedy, theatre, and a host of other all-ages events. This year’s headliner is Lisa Loeb, who will be performing her Grammy-award-winning kids’ album Feel What U Feel. You’ll also find a variety of free activities at nearby Mel Lastman Square—perfect for budget-conscious families.

2) Junior – International Children’s Festival

It turns out there are a few fantastic arts and cultural festivals for kids this month. One that’s sure to be a great time is the Junior – International Children’s Festival, which features performers from across Canada and all over the globe. Dance, film, visual arts, music—this jam-packed event has it all. In addition to ticketed performances, there are plenty of free things to do at the festival (from viewing circus acts to listening to lively storytelling). Check it out from May 18th-24th.

3) Dundas West Fest

On June 7th and 8th, check out one of the most fun-filled annual street festivals in Toronto. At Dundas West Fest, you’ll find musical performances, art displays, delicious food, local vendors, dancing, yoga lessons, and more—all spread over 12 city blocks. If your children are young, you should also check out the Kids’ Zone. From bouncy castles to face painting to child-friendly entertainment, there will be no shortage of activities for your little ones to enjoy.

4) Wee Festival

Aimed at very young children, Wee Festival is unique. From May 11th-20th, those with babies, toddlers, and kindergarteners will want to check out this carefully-curated event. You’ll find a variety of theatrical performances, some of which rely solely on music, light, and other stimulating effects as opposed to words (making them ideal for little ones who haven’t started talking). Put simply, it’s never too early to encourage a child’s interest in the arts!

5) Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival

For something a little bit different, visit the Toronto International Dragon Boat Festival. Located on one of the Toronto Islands, this outdoor event is the perfect way to transition from spring to summer. Dragon boats, which have a long history in China, are a beautiful sight to behold. On June 15th and 16th, you and your family can see them in action as teams from around the world take them out to race. While you’re on Centre Island, consider visiting the William Meany Maze—a life-sized labyrinth made of black cedar trees.

These are just a few of the fun, family-friendly festivals happening in and around Toronto this spring. Interested in discovering what else is going on in the city’s communities? Check out our neighbourhood guides to learn more!
