Summer is coming to an end, which means fall is right around the corner. Along with the cooler weather and beautiful foliage, the change of seasons brings a bountiful autumn harvest. One of the best ways to take advantage of it is by checking out Toronto’s vibrant farmers’ markets. Whether you’re looking to prepare the perfect squash soup or simply enjoy a morning or afternoon out with the family, nothing beats browsing the fare offered by your local food producers.
Here are five fantastic farmers’ markets that are definitely worth a visit this fall…
1) Sorauren
In the heart of charming Sorauren Park, you’ll find one of the best local food marketplaces in the city. It’s not just the produce that makes this year-round farmers’ market so special—it’s also the spirit behind it. This weekly event (held every Monday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.) has a friendly feel and a strong focus on sustainability, giving it a true sense of community. On Labour Day, don’t forget to check out a special Country Fair edition of the market! This is an opportunity for the whole family to ring in the fall season with games, live music, and a corn roast (among other activities).
2) Evergreen Brick Works
It doesn’t get better than the farmers’ market at Evergreen Brick Works. This marketplace, which is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., is the largest of its kind in the city. In other words, you’re pretty much guaranteed to find whatever fall fare you’re looking for (so long as it was grown in the region—Brick Works champions the local food movement). Once your bag is filled with gorgeous potatoes and Brussels sprouts, grab some treats from one of the vendors selling baked goods. The ginger cookies at St. John’s Bakery are to die for, and the kids will love them as much as you will!
3) The Junction
Every Saturday morning, vendors set up shop along a lively strip of Dundas St. West as part of the Junction Farmers’ Market. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., head over the train platform for some of the freshest fare in the GTA. Whether you’re looking for antibiotic-free meat, vegan pasta, or organic cider (not to mention plenty of produce), you’ll find everything you need here to whip up a flavourful autumn feast. This quaint market runs until early November, so be sure to enjoy it while you can!
4) Leslieville
The Leslieville Farmers’ Market is as much an ongoing celebration as it is a place to buy food. This is the place to pick up your autumn staples, chat with friendly community members, and even catch some live music. To get a sense of what this Sunday event is all about, check out the market’s Instagram account. Tempting images of colourful produce, fresh-baked pies, and perfectly-roasted coffee will draw you in, while the warm faces of merchants and vendors will make you feel at home before you ever set foot in Jonathan Ashbridge Park. You can check it out between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. every Sunday until October 27th.
5) Trinity Bellwoods
When fall hits, it’s tempting to get cozy under a warm blanket. Why not pop some fall vegetables into the oven to roast first? If this idea appeals, you’ll find everything you need to make it happen at the Trinity Bellwoods Farmers’ Market. Next Tuesday afternoon (anytime between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.), head on over to one of the city’s most popular parks to buy some beets, carrots, parsnips—whatever strikes your fancy. To pack in the flavour, remember to grab some garlic from Red Dog Farm!
