Over Ikea? Try These 5 Affordable Toronto Furniture Stores

Do you have an eye for design, a flair for the creative, or simply a desire to make your home more beautiful? Furnishing a new house or condo can be a lot of fun, but sky-high prices often put a damper on the process.

For affordable furnishings, many new homeowners believe Ikea is their only option. But that’s simply not true. Here, we’ll look at five Ikea alternatives here in Toronto.

1) Parliament Furniture

If you’re looking for home furnishings in Cabbagetown, make sure you swing by
Parliament Furniture. The store is a fixture in the neighbourhood. A family-run business, it’s been around since 1994. More importantly, the furniture they sell ranges from clean and modern to ornate—and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

While you’ll see some pricier statement pieces at Parliament Furniture, you’ll also find
a wide selection of items that are on par with Ikea in terms of price. On a recent visit to their digital shop, we found a variety of accent chairs for under $300 apiece, along with entire dining sets for under $400.

Looking for even more places to shop in Toronto? Here are some ideas!

2) Structube

Structube might just be the best Ikea alternative in Toronto. The Canadian franchise sells a wide variety of stylish furniture and decor for every room, all at affordable prices.

While we would argue that Structube offers a greater variety of styles than Ikea, a lot of the company’s furniture shares the minimalist look that the Swedish giant is known for. Take the Hamburg bed frame, which exudes elegance. That’s another thing—like Ikea, Structube names some of its items after cities. The Versailles bed frame, which has a regal headboard that’s adorned with diamond button tufting, is also very popular.

There are currently ten locations across the city. Each store will have what you’re looking for, and you won’t break the bank to buy it. Bottom line: if you walk into Structube, you’re walking out with a piece of furniture (or several). It’s that kind of place.

3) The Singing Lady

The Singing Lady is a consignment store in Etobicoke that sells everything from housewares and art to jewellery and kids clothing. Most importantly for our purposes, it’s a great place to find beautiful furniture at very reasonable prices.

At over 13,000 square feet, the Singing Lady’s showroom offers no shortage of options. But you won’t have to work too hard to find elegant dressers, coffee tables, and armchairs at Ikea prices. Helpful hint: to get the most amazing deals, check out their door crasher specials.

For those unfamiliar with the consignment world: Toronto’s consignment shops sell goods on behalf of their owners, taking a percentage when they’re sold. Since these items come from homes across the GTA, they originate from various time periods and are often truly unique.

4) The Brick

The Brick is the country’s largest home furniture retailer, and the company sells a wide range of Canadian-made items. Their slogan, “Nobody Beats The Brick,” rings true when it comes to affordability.

With many locations across the GTA (including one in the Beaches and one at the corner of Dufferin and Greary), the Brick is also conveniently located for most Torontonians. The only downside is that some items are on the pricier side (in particular, the store’s reclining leather sofas can cost more than some new homeowners are willing to spend). But you’ll find a selection of more affordable furniture, such as sofas made of fabrics like chenille and microsuede.

5) Eclectisaurus

Eclectisaurus is another gem in the east end. This little shop on Gerrard St E is for those seeking bold, vintage pieces. It’s the type of place you go if you’re looking for the perfect mid-century statement coffee table. You may or may not find exactly what you’re looking for. Either way, the trip is worth it.

In addition to furniture, Eclectisaurus sells a variety of different types of home decor, from glass vases to ceramic art and vintage light fixtures. Prices run the gamut, but you’ll find items in the store for as little as ten dollars.
