Often, finding a neighbourhood that’s just right involves a little bit of compromise. You can have a safe and quiet community perfect for families, even if it is a bit sleepy for your preferences.
Or, you could choose a ‘hood full of action and excitement, where you’re never quite sure what happens next, but whatever it is, you’re first in line for it. On the flip side, the most exciting neighbourhoods aren’t always the best places for families.
An enclave that is family-friendly and in the heart of the action, where every day brings a new adventure? That sounds like you just might be describing Danforth Village. Today, let’s explore this one-of-a-kind Toronto East neighbourhood in more detail.
An Ideal Location: No Compromises Necessary
Wide residential streets with minimal traffic and plenty of playgrounds make it an idyllic spot for families. When you experience the camaraderie and close-knit community, you’ll quickly understand why residents often describe this area as a “Village in the City.”
It also instantly makes sense why we call it one of Toronto’s hidden gems. There is nothing not to love about “The Danny” (yet another affectionate nickname for Danforth Village). The sheer amount of parks gets nods of approval from local kids and from the parents who prefer that they play outside.

The Many Parks and Green Spaces of Danforth Village
Just walking down the residential streets can make you feel like you’re on a hiking trail, thanks to the number of mature trees all around. Plus, during the warmer months, it seems that everyone is outside tending to their gardens, adding even more natural beauty to the area.
If that’s not enough, there is also an abundance of dedicated parks for residents to enjoy. A few examples include:
Dentonia Park: A baseball diamond, cricket patch, basketball court, playground and splashpad make this a hot spot to run around and then cool off during the summer months!
Not to be confused with the adjacent Dentonia Park Golf Course. Technically, that’s in Scarborough, but it’s still less than a 10-minute drive. Both the park and the golf course are located on the breathtaking Taylor Massey Creek ravine system.
Stephenson Park: There is so much to do here that the tagline is actually “a City Within a Park.” An outdoor table tennis, pickleball court, outdoor fire pit, sports pad, children’s playground, splash pad, and wading pool are among the amenities residents love.
Maryland Park: Just imagine, one entire hectare that consists of four outdoor tennis courts, fully lit, and complete with its own clubhouse. There’s also a playground and a wide-open green space. Run, kids, run! Get those jitterbugs out!
If that’s not enough green space or one spot is busy, not to worry. You have plenty of options, including Kildonan Park, Coleman Park, Stanley G. Grizzle Park, or Norwood Park, to name a few.
Excitement and Entertainment
We promised you excitement, and Danforth Village will never disappoint. We are pretty sure we also promised fantastic shopping. If it wasn’t stated outright, it was implied!
The shops, boutiques, and most of all, restaurants along Danforth Avenue are practically legendary. You’ll find everything from cool discount stores for a little of “this and that” to independent clothing boutiques, delectable bakeries, trendy fitness studios, and more.
Danforth Village has a very definite Greek influence throughout; hence the number of great restaurants that will leave you craving more. The neighbourhood is also home to the Taste of the Danforth festival, which is back and better than ever!
When it comes to entertainment and nightlife, there’s always something going on. You may need to head to downtown Toronto if you want to see a major act along with 20,000 other people.
But if you have a passion for local talent and intimate performances, check out a unique, local venue like Hirut Café, The Groove Bar & Grill, or Press Vinyl Cafe (basically a record store which doubles as a cafe with live music – a very cool and trendy neighbourhood hangout). Any of these options gives you a chance to enjoy two of our favourite things all at once, music and food! For a night of side-splitting laughter, book your ticket at Comedy Bar Danforth.
Coincidentally, if you did want to get to downtown Toronto, you could make the trip in less than half an hour, depending on traffic. If you want to skip the traffic, just hop on the number 2 subway at Broadview, switch to line one at St. George, and it’s a three-minute walk. Alternatively, you could take the streetcar, the bus, or the Go Train. Easy access to public transit makes Danforth Village as convenient as it is beautiful and fun.
