It’s December, and holiday excitement is growing across the GTA. While cozy nights in are a great way to connect with loved ones at this time of year, there’s also a lot to be said for the wonderful winter festivities that will be taking place around the city. From holiday markets to creative, family-friendly events, you’ll find no shortage of things to do in and around Toronto this season.
Here are just a few of the joyous happenings you’ll want to check out during December…
1) The Toronto Christmas Market
The annual Christmas Market is a beloved holiday tradition for many Toronto families. Until December 23, the historic Distillery District hosts a diverse mix of local craftspeople, artisanal chefs, and festive performers. Shop the market’s vendors to find something special for everyone on your Christmas list. Check out the light displays and 50-foot tree to get in the holiday spirit. Sample some tasty treats with the kids, then take them on a magical carousel or ferris wheel ride. Put simply, the sights and sounds of the Christmas Market are pretty much guaranteed to get you in a celebratory mood. Admission is free on weekdays, and just $6 on the weekends (kids under two get in for free).
2) Your local holiday market
The Distillery District isn’t the only place you’ll find a holiday market in Toronto. This month, there will be an abundance of incredible craft fairs and marketplaces across the city. One of the most popular examples is the Holiday Fair in the Square. Held in Nathan Phillips Square, this merry event offers an assortment of fantastic vendors—along with a skating rink and plenty of holiday entertainment. Until December 23, you can check it out for free. Other great events for shoppers include the Tranzac Holiday Gift Fair (a holiday craft market in the Annex) and the Toronto Etsy Team’s Annual Christmas Marketplace (the perfect place to peruse handmade goods).
3) Christmas at Casa Loma
Casa Loma is always a magical place to visit, but it’s especially vibrant over the holidays. This year, the historic site is hosting a Nutcracker-themed Christmas. Attractions include ice-skating performances from Glisse on Ice and illusionist Professor Wick. The little ones will also enjoy visiting Santa’s workshop, creating seasonal arts and crafts, and decorating festive treats (among other activities). Last but not least, you’ll definitely want to check out the castle’s selection of professionally-designed Christmas trees—including a stunning 40-footer. Christmas at Casa Loma runs until January 6. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.
4) ROM for the Holidays
All year, families flock to the Royal Ontario Museum (the ROM) for fun and educational experiences. During the holidays, they’re invited to get festive at the museum with a variety of winter activities. One of the biggest highlights is the massive ice snowglobe, where attendees are encouraged to take selfies. In addition, kids will enjoy getting their faces painted, decorating ornaments, and taking dance lessons inspired by the movements of animals. As always, the ROM is also hosting some incredible exhibits. While they’re not included in admission, you may want to consider checking them out (Spiders: Fear and Fascination is particularly popular).
5) Winter at Ontario Place
Who says you have to stop celebrating winter when the holidays end? Until March 17, you can head over to the West Island of Ontario Place to enjoy skating, s’mores, and a roaring bonfire. You’ll also find gorgeous seasonal light exhibitions created by local artists. While you’re there, you might want to consider seeing a film at the Cinesphere. The theatre is currently running a film series that includes classics like the Sound of Music, Diehard, and the Wizard of Oz.
